I pulled up to the drive up of my local coffee shop and, as usual, I was greeted with a smile and a friendly “hello.” The young lady at the window asked about my week and what I had planned for the coming weekend. Normally, I stop at this coffee shop on my way to work, but it was a holiday and I had the day off. Instead of being alone, I had our amazing little dog, Charlie, sitting next to me.
Charlie loves people and as soon as noticed that the girl in the window was friendly, he scurried over my lap and said hello to her. The barista laughed and then offered us a small surprise. She asked, “Would your puppy like a dog bone?”
I have worked in marketing for about five years now. In that time, I have had experience in almost every aspect of the business. I know all the “tricks” and yet, there I sat, laughing and having fun as this young lady engaged with me and my puppy. She had won us over as customers and to this day (six months later), this is the only coffee shop I go to. Her sincere efforts made a world of difference and there was a major lesson to be learned: Great marketing is easy to do (if you know where to start).
Not only is great marketing easy to do, it doesn’t have to cost a lot of money. That’s what I will be writing about over the next several weeks on my blog. I’ll be covering everything from branding to team member engagement in an attempt to help you improve your small business marketing.
As we proceed, please share your ideas, stories and comments. I would like to use this as an opportunity to share what I know and learn from you as well.
Tomorrow’s topic – passion.
